 Cart Transportation

On your ferry trip over to Daufuskie Island you left behind the hustle and bustle of the real world, including the traffic and congestion which is so much a part of most people's lives.

Daufuskie Island offers a wonderful alternative to that draining lifestyle.  Imagine no traffic jams, no traffic lights, no crowded roads and almost no traffic and nary a car to be seen.

What you will see traveling the roads are golf carts.  This has become the Island's basic means of transportation.  You may find yourself traveling down a paved road and perhaps seeing another cart, this is Daufuskie Island traffic.  It's customary to wave hello to your fellow traveler.  It may seem a little strange to wave to a complete stranger, but by the third wave you will sense that you too have undergone a transformation into the friendly, neighborly culture that is part of the island's heritage.  Should you be a little unsure of your path or direction, don't hesitate to ask.  Islanders and visitors are eager to help.

The carts will generally carry four passengers, two seated forward and two seated facing backwards.  The carts will most likely be electric.  While they run slow, they are highly dependable and can generally travel 30 miles before requiring a battery charge.  To charge the battery simply plug into the available electrical outlet at your property each night.  The carts will have a battery charge indicator that can be seen day and night displaying the level of charge remaining.  The carts also have lights for night driving.  As you will likely be unfamiliar with the roads and paths, it is a good idea to avoid night driving.

Driving the golf cart requires, by law, that the driver have a valid driving license.  Children are not permitted to drive the carts.  Without a drivers license, you cannot operate a golf cart.  Any damage to a golf cart is the responsibility of the registered guest, and repairs will be charged to the guest's credit card.

Most carts do not offer protection from rain.  It is a good idea to avoid using the cart during inclement weather.  Should you get caught in the rain, continue to drive carefully.  You'll get wet, but your clothes will dry out.

In conclusion, the carts are an integral part of your Island experience and they definitely contribute to the wonderful Daufuskie Island feeling of tranquility, novelty, and adventure.
